Making a List and Checking it Twice – Claire McTernan

Making a List and Checking it Twice

Santa gets it right.

Ever year no matter what political or personal situation he’s facing he always pulls it out of the bag (quite literally).

So what can we as business owners learn from Santa’s approach.

Making a List and Checking it Twice

Making a list & checking it twice

I suddenly remembered the other day an action that I hadn’t done (this is rare for me!).

I had fallen into the trap of putting it on my list but not moving it on to my new list.

Basically I hadn’t been Santa as I hadn’t checked it twice.

It’s that detailed approach that I’m sure has helped Santa avoid forgetting things numerous times that would also benefit us while we run our businesses.

How often do you forget things?

The Art of Delegation

Santa has his huge team of elves to get through all of that toy building and preparation each year so I’m assuming he must be good at delegation.

Are you?

I love delegating and on the whole I have a good solid team of 5 people that I delegate to.

How about you?

  • How clear are you about what needs to be done and by when?
  • Having a team around you (out-sourced or in-sourced) is key to growing your business.
  • How well are all that team working right now?
  • What steps do you need to take to improve it?

Good planning

Given the size of Santa’s task each year I’m also assuming he must be good at planning.

Are you?

I don’t mean your weekly To Do list, but a proper yearly plan so you know what key milestones you need to hit and by when.

Santa knows the toy quotas he needs to hit each quarter so no children are disappointed on Christmas Eve.

What’s your equivalent of your toy quota?  How well do you know your numbers?

The Naughty & Nice List

In business terms we have several Naughty & Nice lists.

We have the list of fab clients and the ones who are less than fab 😊  They are the ones who are late paying their bills, who are simply more demanding than they have the right to be.

Now Santa is very clear of the consequence of being on the Naughty list.  Are you?

Who do you need to talk to from your naughty list to ensure they end up on the nice list next year?

Get it done!

Taking time off

Santa is excellent at having a good rest after he’s finished delivering his presents every year.  Are you?

How often do you take proper time off?

I take time off every school holiday so I’m pretty disciplined with it.  Are you?

How well do you totally switch off?

I’m not going to preach at you as I know you are fully aware that you need to take time off, so please do enjoy your down time this Christmas & New Year period while the whole country does the same.

Have a fab Christmas x
